Beat the Heat with Gorgeous Pleat

Pleats styles makes your skirt look fashionable. Pleats are formed by doubling the garments using fabric and sewing the fold lines to secure the folds. Pleats give shape to the clothes –  design them to make an impression as they fall in soft rounded folds.

Pleats looks difficult, but they are easy to make and give a fashionable flavor to the dress.

This post, we explain some common pleat styles.

  1. Accordion Pleats: Accordion pleats or knife pleats is a tight pleat form which allows the garment to change its shape when moving. Accordion pleating is also used for some dress sleeves, such as pleating the end of the elbow, with the fullness of the pleat gathered closely at the cuff. Accordion pleats are usually made by professionals and heat-dried to keep their shape.
  2. Box Pleats: Box pleats are knife pleats back-to-back, and tend to spring out from the waistline. They create a bulkier seam. Box pleats are formed by folding the garment to the wrong side and stitching it to form the pleat on the right side. This is a very trendy type of women skirt. The bottom looks flared and it allows for ease of movement.

  3.  Cartridge Pleats: Cartridge pleats are used when the designer needs to gather large amount of fabric into a small waistband without adding bulk to the seam. This type of pleating also allows the fabric of the skirt or sleeve to spring out from the seam. Fabric is evenly gathered using two or more lengths of basting stitches, and is used to attach the increasingly full bell-shaped skirts to the fashionable narrow waist.

  4. Honeycomb Pleats: Honeycomb pleats are narrow, rolled pleats used as a foundation for smocking.

  5. Organ Pleats: Organ pleats are parallel rows of softly rounded pleats resembling the pipes of a pipe organ. These are made by inserting one or more gores into a panel of fabric.
