Fashion Sketching is the basics to Fashion Design… and in the industry, one of the few things that sets you apart as a noted Fashion Designer. Your sketches must portray your ideas, be inspirational and empower your clients to make the bold statement.
This blog-post, we share with you a fundamental guide to Sketching basics:
- Make a good croquis:A croquis is a fundamental traceable drawing pose of a model that can be traced over and over again and used as the underlying style for all your creations. You can search for a croquis online or in fashion books or create your own. We encourage students to make their own drawings and develop a signature croquis which can then become one of the fundamental steps towards developing your own personal brand. How to make:
- Print a photo of a model (typically an exaggerated tall model figure – 9 / 10 heads will do) from a mag or fashion picture.
- Put a tracing paper on top
- Trace it out – ensure that correct proportions and details are captured.
- Use the traced image to create your model figure base over and over again.
- Make your Designs: In this step, you need to be as imaginative as possible. How to start:
- Start with regular trends that you see everyday.
- Then make minor changes and makeovers.
- Try “experiential sketches” taking inspiration from the nature and replicate the idea in form of a garment style.
- The mantra is ” Don’t Panic, Just Practice”. Create as many Fashion Sketches as possible. Not all will be perfect, but that’s ok.
- Use colors to make it memorable.
- Develop a Style of your own: As you repeat Step 2 more and more, you will see a trend emerging in your designs. There will be certain drawing elements, colors, garment types and poses that becomes distinctly yours. You tend to become comfortable with these trends and develop aesthetics that accentuate these styles. Keep a track of these and very soon, you can start building your own portfolios. Who knows, your unique styles may get you a lot of fame in the coming days.
